Presentation Is (Almost) Everything

If you’re trading in your RV, you want it to look like it’s brand new. Because let’s be honest, if you were shopping for a camper and you found one that was dirty and dinged up, would you buy it? Luckily, a good cleaning can do most of the heavy lifting for you. To make sure you get every piece looking its best, here’s what you do:

  • Remove any and all personal effects. This isn’t going to be your camper anymore, and you want whoever looks at it next to see themselves reflected in it.
  • Wash the exterior of the camper. Use a gentle hose and soft rags or sponges to avoid damaging the paint, seals, or caulking.
  • Check the awning for stains or tears.
  • Touch up any chips and scratches.
  • Wash all the windows and mirrors.
  • Clean all cabinets, wardrobes, and storage compartments.
  • Empty and thoroughly clean out the fridge and freezer.
  • Clean the microwave, stovetop, sinks, and faucets. Again, use gentle implements and cleaning solutions to avoid damaging the finish.
  • Eliminate odors by washing and cleaning all carpets and linens.
  • Replace any stained or damaged upholstery.
  • Clean and disinfect the shower and toilet, still keeping to gentler cleaning implements.
  • Make sure mattresses and cushions are clean and odor-free.
  • Spray an air freshener around the inside. Something mild to avoid any allergic reactions, but with a nice scent that makes you feel good about being in there.

Maintenance Is (Most Of) The Rest

Obviously, no matter how shiny your camper is, it still needs to function properly. Conduct a thorough inspection of all your RV’s systems and moving parts to make sure everything is running well and ready for the road. If there are any minor repairs you can handle yourself, it can make the RV more appealing and save you some money.

You’ll want to:

  • Check the condition and age of the tires. If the tread is low or there’s damage to the side walls, that will lower your trade-in value. Change them if you can.
  • Also make sure the tread is the same depth on all four tires. If it’s wearing down unevenly, there may be an alignment issue.
  • Make sure all steps into the RV are steady.
  • Check to see if all appliances and outlets work properly.
  • Replace all burnt-out lightbulbs.
  • Ensure there are no leaks in the roof or windows.
  • Check your water inlet, water pump, water holding tank, water heater, sinks, showers, faucets, and waste systems. Make sure they all work flawlessly and that there are no drips or leaks.
  • Check for soft spots on your floor that might indicate wood rot in the sub-floor. If you find any, pull the carpet and replace the sub-flooring.
  • Make sure the battery compartment, wiring, and terminals are all clean and free of corrosion.
  • Find all keys to all locks on the camper.

Finally, Gather Your Documents

Make sure you have all the necessary papers in order. This includes the RV registration, service records, and anything else a prospective buyer might want to see. Well-maintained campers retain more of their original value, so you’ll want to keep the vehicle history report updated by filling in the service and maintenance details.
